The job of a photojournalist is as risky as that of a footballer; capturing a perfect shot just when something unfolds and scoring that perfect goal both require presence of mind, says footballer I.M. Vijayan.

He was opening “Beyond Words 2019”, a photo exhibition organised by the Calicut Photojournalist Forum and Calicut Press Club at the Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery here on Wednesday.

Mr. Vijayan recalled that only one photographer was able to click his back-volley against Perlis, a Malaysian team, for JCT Phagwara at the Scissors Cup final in 1995 at the corporation stadium in Kozhikode. “That was a perfect moment. I also remember my dear friend Victor George, who lost his life in a landslip while picturing rain during the monsoon,” he said.

Eighty photographs captured by 40 photojournalists are on display till September 1. They cover a range of issues such as the recent landslips at Puthumala in Wayanad district and Kavalappara in Malappuram district, adventure tourism, sports, ecology and other photos from Kozhikode city.

Marcus Joseph, captain of Gokulam FC; Henry Kisekka, and former Indian footballers V.P. Shaji and Jo Paul Ancheri were present.
