Former students, relatives and well-wishers on Thursday greeted historian M.G.S. Narayanan who recently celebrated his 86th birthday.

The event, organised by the MGS History Foundation, had its own share of surprise too when Mr. Narayanan’s wife, Premalatha, revealed to the gathering that it was their 53rd wedding anniversary.

Historians M.R. Raghava Warrier and P.P. Sudhakaran were among those who were both students and later colleagues of Mr. Narayanan in the History Department of Calicut University.

Mr. Warrier recalled how both of them had a difficult time travelling to Ezhimala to decipher ancient stone scripts. Others too went down memory lane recalling how they were groomed by their favourite teacher.

Then, there were songs and small talk.

Mr. Narayanan cut the birthday cake too. He said he wished to continue his life being an active participant in social life and forming new friendships.

His birthday falls on August 20, but the event was postponed in the wake of the floods, the organisers said.

Mr. Narayanan’s son, Vijay Narayanan, was present, apart from functionaries of the Foundation.

The celebration came to a close with a delectable traditional Kerala-style feast.
