Five local bodies pulled up for not implementing zero waste scheme

Mukkom municipality, 4 panchayats get show-cause notice

The Kozhikode district administration has pulled up the Mukkom municipality and four panchayats for failing to implement the zero-waste sanitation initiative launched in 2017.

Project meeting

At a project meeting chaired by District Collector U.V. Jose here on Friday, a decision was taken to serve show-cause notice on the municipality and the four grama panchayats of Narikkuni, Arikkulam, Kunnamangalam and Peruvayal under the Disaster Management Act.

At the meeting attended by the project supervision team, the Mukkom municipal authorities were held responsible for the delay in constituting the ‘Haritha Karma Sena’ which was supposed to coordinate the ward-level waste collection and segregation activities. The local body was accused of cold-shouldering the earlier directives issued by the district administrators for the effective treatment of plastic waste.

The four panchayats were held accountable for delaying the identification of a suitable spot for setting up the material recovery facility.

They were also found neglecting the time-bound completion of various activities connected with the zero waste project implementation.

Strict action

In last week’s review meeting at the Collectorate, Mr. Jose had warned of stringent action against local bodies found neglecting the implementation of projects.
