The government will not write off home loans taken by financially secure borrowers from the Kerala State Housing Board (KSHB), Minister for Revenue and Housing E. Chandrasekharan has said.
Opening a district-level one-time settlement adalat organised by the KSHB to settle the pending grievances of some of its defaulters at the Collectorate here on Thursday, the Minister said such persons would be given three more months to pay back their dues. The financially stable individuals should not expect any exemption from the government, he clarified.
Mr. Chandrasekharan made it clear that the KSHB and Revenue Department officials had already conducted joint inspections in the State to verify the financial status of all the defaulters and the legitimacy of their claims for waiver. “The government has no plans to send out any one from their house. However, recovery actions, if required, will be taken against financially sound defaulters who were identified by the joint inspection squad,” he warned.
At the adalat, 283 out of 300 complaints from 88 villages in Kozhikode district were considered. KSHB officials said the total payment due from such complainants who sought waiver was ₹22.47 crore. In the inspection, it was found that 146 of the total applicants belonged to the middle income group. Thirty-four of them were under the higher income group. Only 120 applicants were found below the lower income group.
