Extension of Intercity, Executive trains from Kannur to Mangaluru sought

The trains halt at Kannur for 16 hours before their return journey

Railway passengers have demanded extension of Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express and Ernakulam Kannur Inter-City Express, which halt at Kannur for 16 hours, up to Mangaluru.

In recent years the strength of passengers travelling on these trains has increased several-fold. As a result, they are forced to travel inside the crammed reserved and unreserved coaches or take buses to reach their destinations. The situation has worsened with the Southern Railway reducing coaches in some of the trains.

Interestingly, the executive train and the intercity train are put to halt at the Kannur station for about 16 hours every day. Extending the services up to Mangaluru would not just benefit the passengers but also help the Railways improve the revenue.

R. Prashanth Kumar, member, Palakkad Railway Division Advisory Committee, said the executive train which reaches Kannur at 11.15 p.m. every day returns to Ernakulam as Intercity Express at 2.35 p.m. next day after a halt of 16 hours. Likewise, the Intercity Express, which reaches Kannur at 12.40 p.m., returns back as Executive Express at 5 a.m. next day.

He said there is a huge migrant population commuting between Mangaluru and Kannur every day on these trains. The two Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses operating from Kannur to Kasaragod and Payyanur at midnight ply with passengers well above their capacity.

There are very few trains after 6.40 p.m. towards Mangaluru, he added.

According to railway officials, there has been an increase in passengers, especially from the station like Kasaragod, Kanhangad and Payyanur. On an average, these three stations alone generate a revenue of ₹ 4.5 crore every month by the sale of tickets. This shows the huge passenger traffic between Kannur and Mangaluru.

Increase in revenue

Extending the services would certainly improve the revenue besides helping the passengers, they said.

K, Rajesh, State committee member, Railway Division Passengers Association, said Southern Railway authorities were yet to act on a memorandum submitted in this regard.

The railway authorities cite lack of maintenance facility and space at Mangaluru Central station as the reason for not extending the services. However, instead of Mangaluru Central, if the trains can be stopped at Mangaluru Junction, the issue can be resolved, he said.
