Expert calls for stress on welfare of elderly

Demography expert S. Irudaya Rajan has said that population growth rate in Kerala is on a declining trend.

Delivering the keynote address at the three-day national seminar on ‘Demography and Development: The missing link’, organised by the Department of Economics of Government Arts and Science College, Kozhikode, Mr. Rajan, a faculty of the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, said the number of elderly people had gone up due to better healthcare facilities while the birth rate has declined. As a result, 16% of the population is elderly people. “The policy-makers should take this factor into consideration while implementing developmental agenda. There should be stress on the welfare of elderly,” he said.

Mr. Rajan said the decline in population growth and increasing migration to other places would lead to a shortage in the availability of skilled workers in the State very soon.
