DPC accused of failure to sense trouble

‘Officer did not deploy necessary force on S.M. Street’

A civil police officer (CPO) has come out with an open social media criticism that the District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) had failed miserably in controlling troublemakers who had stormed S.M. Street on hartal day on Thursday.

In his Facebook post on Saturday, Umesh Vallikkunnu, the CPO, alleged that the District Police Chief was a “total failure” as he could not foresee the attack on the street and deploy necessary force to meet the security challenge.

The CPO said the DPC was accountable for the poor deployment of security personnel at Valiyangadi where traders had defied the hartal call and opened shops. There were only two policemen on duty to offer protection to merchants, he said.

“A real police chief is someone who gives strength to his subordinates without treating them as slaves. We need [to have] better planning to meet the challenges of [the] hartal based on the situation[s]. Adopting the conventional style for every occasion will never work [out],” he said.

The CPO also pointed out that senior officers should change their perception of considering subordinates as fools.

The police higher-ups are yet to respond to the post which was widely circulated. It has already been shared by nearly 1,000 persons on Facebook.
