DMO issues alert against dengue in district

June 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - Kozhikode:

With an unusual number of dengue cases being reported from various parts of the district in recent days, District Medical Officer Piyush Namboothirippad has issued an alert against communicable diseases.

There has been a steep increase in the number with 41 confirmed dengue cases in May compared to five in April. There have been 132 suspected cases of dengue in May while it was only 13 in April. There were two dengue deaths in May — one each in Koduvally and Thiruvambadi. The DMO informed that the most alarming situation was in Mukkam and surrounding areas, while the situation in Koduvally, Feroke and Kozhikode Corporation limits too was not very satisfactory.

The Health Department in the district was doing all that was possible to control the disease, Dr. Namboothirippad said adding that it was possible only through a collective effort of the officials and the public. He said that the department was trying to educate the local people on the need to observe dry day.

A normal fever and cold during the rainy season can be cured through proper rest and consumption of fluids and nutritious food. People with fever should stay away from children, the elderly, and pregnant women. Cover mouth and nose with a kerchief while sneezing and coughing. The towel or tissue paper should be properly disposed of after use. Wash hands with soap regularly. Students with fever should stay at home.

Waterlogging after rain is a major reason for the mosquitoes menace and hence any source which could be a breeding ground for mosquitoes, such as coconut shell used in rubber plantations, and parts of areca and coconut trees where water accumulates, should be eliminated. Garbage should not be thrown out irresponsibly. Mosquito repellent creams and nets could be used, he added.

The department is undertaking fogging and chlorination of water sources. Directives have been issued to schools to take special precautions on their premises. Squads have also been appointed to inspect the schools.
