The district administration has set up a three-member panel to explore the possibilities of evolving a scientific mechanism to dispose of embalmed body parts after their use at the medical college. It was decided at a meeting convened by District Collector U.V. Jose here on Wednesday.

The panel has been asked to submit its report within a week. The District Medical Officer; Superintendent, Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode; and head of the Department of Anatomy, Government Medical College, Kozhikode, are its members.

The District Collector said the issue had been brought to the attention of the Health Minister to seek the help of State-level experts. Medical college authorities said that 20 bodies were being used in a year for studies at the college and the body parts were being disposed of once in three months.

The District Collector convened the meeting against the backdrop of the people’s protest on Tuesday against unscientific dumping of embalmed body parts.
