Taking a cue from the participation of teachers in the rescue and relief during the floods in August, a group of them from Kozhikode district is being trained in disaster management.

The project titled Vilippadakale (At a hailing distance) has been conceived by the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Kozhikode.

Mithu Thimothy, DIET lecturer and coordinator for the project, said on Saturday that the plan was to have a task force ready to be deployed in disaster-hit regions.

“The teachers community is not scientifically trained to address unexpected natural disasters. Many are not aware of their consequences too,” she pointed out.

In the initial phase, 50 select teachers in aided and government schools from 17 sub-districts would be trained. They could be deployed in their respective local areas, Ms. Thimothy said.

On Saturday, the teachers were trained in administering first aid. Doctors from Baby Memorial Hospital also spoke about the psychological approach to deal with natural disasters.
