MPs told to take up commuters’ suggestions including extension of services.

There is a growing clamour for more trains in the Kannur-Shoranur sector as shortage of trains has affected commuters in north Kerala.

The Railway Ministry has been urged to introduce more trains to mitigate the problems facing passengers, especially women and children. No train operates from the Kozhikode railway station for four hours from 1.47 p.m. to Shoranur.

A new passenger train is required after 3 p.m. in the sector. The Coimbatore-Kannur Fast Passenger that departs from Shoranur at 4.12 p.m. is frequently getting delayed in Kozhikode.

Now, passengers have demanded that MPs representing the region consider their suggestions including introduction of new trains and extension of existing services.

Among the demands are rescheduling the Chennai-Egmore- Mangalore Express between Shoranur and Kozhikode.

At present, the train starts from Kozhikode for Mangaluru at 5 p.m. though it reaches Kozhikode at 3.55 p.m. Another is the timing of the Thrissur-Kozhikode Passenger (56663). It starts from Thrissur at 3 p.m. This has to be rescheduled.

Similarly, the timings of the Shoranur-Kozhikode Passenger (56601) should be revised for the benefit of commuters. The train should depart from Thrissur at 3.30 p.m. so as to reach Kozhikode at 5.30 p.m.

Besides, the Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) service trains that serve short- and medium-distance routes elsewhere in the State should be introduced in Malabar.
