Cultured nationalism a tool to mask oppression: Muneer

Second death anniversary of V.C. Harris observed

The dehumanisation process was the first step of oppression and it was happening in Kashmir, Assam and Gujarat, said MLA M.K. Muneer, at the dialogue on subaltern expressions organised in connection with the second death anniversary of writer-orator V.C. Harris.

“Those in power are dehumanising people, when they compare the people who died in the genocide in Gujarat to a puppy that was run over by a truck or when a whole community is referred to as a virus,” he said. “Indianness” or “cultured nationalism” for which even language was used as a tool, he said, was a mechanism to mask the oppression of the already marginalised communities. Explaining the various meanings of the word ‘subaltern’, he commended the role of Marxist philospher Antonio Gramsci in giving it a new meaning, and Ranajit Guha for familiarising the term to Indians.

Josy Joseph, a close associate of Harris, said the subaltern community consisted of those who were marginalised under any authority. Harris was someone who questioned his own privileged background and stood for the subaltern community, he added. The discussion was followed by the screening of Kali, a film by Naranippuzha Shanavas.
