At Sargaalaya in scenic Iringal village near here, 256 stalls are being put up to display handicrafts from across the country at the fifth edition of Sargaalaya Iringal International Crafts Festival from December 20 to January 5. These will be in addition to the 61 permanent stalls that already function there.

The event is organised every year at Sargaalaya Arts and Crafts Village, an initiative of the Department of Tourism and managed by Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society.

Chief Executive Officer of the society P.P. Bhaskaran told presspersons on Thursday that this was South India’s biggest handicraft fair. It occupied the third position in the Responsible Tourism programme in the State.

“The fair is held on the lines of the one got up every year at Surajkund in Haryana. This time, it is also part of the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival that is on from December 1 to January 15,” he said.

So far, 350 artisans, including 60 nationally-recognised, have registered. However, of the total 256 stalls, 203 would be allotted to artisans from 22 States, while the rest of the stalls would go to government handicraft establishments and also National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development to display products of the projects it had promoted.

Chairman and managing director Rameshan Paleri said the handicraft village and the fair it hosted provided livelihood for many people.

Sargaalaya also has utility items such as bags, table spreads, towels, and also saris and dress materials.

“Handicraft items are produced with minimum investment, and the entire effort is aimed at promoting the livelihood of the artisans,” said Mr. Bhaskaran. “Sargaalaya symbolises our firm belief that locally available resources can be used effectively for livelihood promotion,” he said.
