The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] on Friday held a people’s convention at Kodencherry in the district against, what it termed, the bid to malign the party over a pregnant woman losing her four-month-old foetus in an alleged attack on her in January.

The woman had suffered miscarriage after she was allegedly attacked by the gang led by the CPI(M) branch secretary at Velamkode. All the six suspects in the case were arrested and the Crime Branch is probing the case.

What is the truth, asks George Thomas

Speaking after inaugurating the convention, CPI(M) district secretariat member George M. Thomas said people deserved to know the truth behind the episode. The woman was injured after a scuffle with her neighbours. She was taken to the hospital by party workers. However, the BJP used the incident for cheap political mileage, he alleged.

CPI(M) Thamarassery area committee secretary R.P. Bhaskara Kurup and Thiruvambady area committee secretary T. Viswanathan accused the BJP of hatching a conspiracy and propagating lies against the CPI(M).

The medical records pertaining to the abortion revealed that the woman lost her foetus due to an earlier illness.

The allegation that the party branch secretary had kicked her was baseless, the CPI(M) leaders said.
