Consumerfed opens school markets across State

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday inaugurated the opening of 750 Consumerfed school fairs across the State that promise to offer quality school accessories at affordable prices.

The Consumerfed initiative is expected to help a large number of economically backward students. Addressing the launch event, Mr. Vijayan said market intervention by Consumerfed was not meant for any publicity but to support the cause of social empowerment. There were times when Consumerfed experienced a breakdown but it had now come out of the crisis.

Denying the charge that Consumerfed was going back on its social service-oriented market interventions, Mr. Vijayan said such remarks were made by people who had brought the federation to the brink of collapse. All cooperative movements in Kerala were on the path of growth during the LDF regime and they also took up public service as a motto with no corruption, he said.

Consumerfed chairman M. Mehaboob said the school markets were expected to generate a total business of ₹12.50 crore during this year. “Last year, there were only 522 school markets and we had managed to get a total income of ₹7.50 crore,” he said.

Mr. Mehaboob said that only high quality articles procured from branded companies would be sold through Consumerfed outlets. A family of two children would be able to save at least ₹1,000 by purchasing from Consumerfed outlets during this academic year, he said.

A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, chaired the event. Mayor Thottathil Raveendran opened the sales.
