Despite continuing challenges in identifying more parking spaces, the corporation hopes to address motorists’ concerns to a large extent with the opening of the first parking plaza in the city on Railway Station Link Road.

The facility is expected to offer multi-level parking slots for over 700 cars and 800 motorbikes.

“The construction of the building is almost complete, and we hope to open it for the public within a year,” said T.V. Lalithaprabha, chairperson of the corporation standing committee on public works. She claimed that the execution of the project was delayed mainly due to the lack of cooperation from the contractor.

Ms. Lalithaprabha also pointed out that efforts were on to clear bottlenecks to commence work on the second parking plaza near S.M. Street.

“A major issue is the pending evacuation of a few shop owners from the project area. We are doing our best to start work as early as possible,” she said.

Considering the problems facing motorists in the area, the traffic police are also making efforts to identify more parking spaces in the city with the support of landowners. According to the police, it will be a temporary arrangement till the completion of the proposed parking plazas in the public sector.

An official attached to the city traffic police station said the enforcement of parking rules continued to be a tough task in the absence of convenient parking facilities.

He added that landowners were not in favour of the idea of temporarily handing over land for the purpose.
