“The huge turnout of people is our reply to political killers,” said Abhinand, 17, son of slain Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, while observing the crowds that had gathered to pay floral tributes at the newly unveiled memorial to Chandrasekharan at Onchiyam on Saturday. “The crowds would definitely proclaim how Chandrasekharan worked for fellow party workers, upholding his political convictions and ideology,” he said on the first death anniversary observance of Chandrasekharan.
It was a difficult task for Abhinand to overcome the mental agony after his father’s death.
“The people of this region and my friends gave us full support, which ultimately helped us tide over the dark days,” he recalled.
Though the incident dealt a blow to the entire family, the young boy said it had not deterred his spirit to be part of political activism.
‘No aversion’
“I have no aversion towards peaceful politics. After my father’s martyrdom, people have understood the gory face of aggressive politics, which we will correct through peaceful means,” he affirmed.
Abhinand, who has completed his Plus Two course, is planning to study engineering and later get involved in active political campaigns of the RMP.
“Education will certainly make me bold and teach me to be part of a responsible politics,” he said.
He said it was the “disloyalty and revenge” shown by some rival political party leaders that shocked and pained the family. “Though many of them had maintained close ties with him, none came forward to save his life,” he said.
Solidarity
Expressing solidarity with the family, most of the visitors met Chandrasekharan’s wife, K.K. Rema, and Abhinand in person at their house.
“This was really the reflection of their love for Chandrasekharan. They were always with us to console and support us,” said Ms. Rema. She also shared that the new memorial in their courtyard was the contribution of people who actually loved him and endorsed his political stance.
