Call to name Kozhikode as ‘City of Music’

Auditorium sought for programmes

May 26, 2017 08:28 am | Updated 08:28 am IST - Kozhikode:

City-based Mohammed Rafi Foundation has urged the City Corporation to declare Kozhikode as the ‘City of Music’ and take steps to construct an auditorium in the city exclusively for cultural programmes.

In a release here on Thursday, K. Subair, general secretary, said that the city residents were ardent music lovers and eminent singers such as K.L. Saigal, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and Mukesh had performed here in front of a jam-packed audience. People here still relish the songs of M.S. Baburaj and Kozhikode Abdul Khader, who hail from here. “It is quite appropriate to rename Kozhikode as a City of Music,” he said. He also pointed out that there were not enough places where cultural programmes could be organised. As the Tagore Centenary Hall was always booked for wedding functions in advance, there was need for a venue.

Earlier, K.V. Sakkeer Hussain was elected president and Mr. Subair as general secretary of the foundation.
