It is high time that the Union government and the Central Haj Committee acted upon the long-standing demand from the State Haj Committee to sanction the Haj quota based on the number of applicants from a State instead of issuing it proportionate to the State’s Muslim population, State Haj Committee chairman Kottumala Bappu Musaliyar has said.

He was speaking at a Haj Umrah conference organised by the Indian Haj and Umrah Tour Operators Association at the Calicut Tower.

Despite repeated requests from the State Haj Committee for the past several years, the Union government had not budged on this, said Mr. Musaliyar, who stated that not even 10 per cent of the total applicants from the State was able to undergo the pilgrimage due to this.

There are around 65,000 applicants for Haj in the government sector this year.

“However the State’s quota is only 5,858,” said Mr. Musaliyar.

He said even fifth-time applicants could not be accommodated this time.
