Bus strike hits life at Vadakara

October 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Kozhikode:

The indefinite strike called by a section of private bus workers in Vadakara taluk has started hitting public life. On Saturday, the workers also prevented the entry of private buses from other locations into the limits of Vadakara taluk.

A second round of talks held by Rural police officers with the bus workers’ coordination committee also failed to settle the issue as the protestors firmly stood by their demand for arresting all suspects in the recent series of attacks against bus crews. As the strike entered the third day on Saturday, taxis were the only means of transport for several commuters.

“People who largely depended on private buses on the Aroor-Theekkuni route were the worst hit by the strike. Even taxi services were minimal on this route,” said Radhakrishnan, a native of Vadakara. He also said the students from the region were finding it hard to reach their schools.

Meantime, the Nadapuram police, on Saturday, arrested three persons, including two minors who were allegedly involved in the recent series of attacks against bus crews from the region. Abdul Gafoor, 19, one of the accused in the incident, was produced before the Nadapuram Judicial First Class Magistrate Court and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
