An indefinite strike planned by the Pantheerankavu unit of the District Private Bus Operators Association from October 1 was cancelled with the decision of the Public Works Department to temporarily repair the damaged road on the Chalappuram-Mankavu route.
Leaders of the association said here on Thursday that the road repair work was in progress under the leadership of the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society. Most of the dangerous potholes had already been filled on the route, so the association decided to drop the protest plan, they added.
Accidents
N.V. Abdul Sathar, president of the Pantheerankavu unit of the association, said they earlier decided to launch an indefinite strike in the wake of the increasing number of accidents on the route.
“Many a time, the bus operators were blamed for the accidents those occurred as a result of the poor condition of the road,” he pointed out.
Mr. Sathar said the Pantheerankavu unit of the bus operators association had introduced various innovative services taking into account the safety and convenience of travellers.
“We were the first in the State to introduce ladies’ only services in the city. Also, we had introduced special services for students,” he pointed out.
