It is not even three years since the Kozhikode regional centre of the State Institute of Languages resumed its book publication. But it has already brought out 100 books in various genres.
The books published include those on the cultural, sociological, and historical aspects of the region. They include around 25 science-related books, over 10 academic books, and a variety of titles that cover subjects such as folklore, art, and biography. From August, 2012, when publication was resumed, the institute conducted a series of book fairs in different villages, from Thrissur to Kasaragod.
S. Krishnakumar, deputy director of the institute for the regional centre, said the enhanced publishing drive of the institute could significantly contribute to widening the spectrum of creative and academic writers and include some newcomers too. “We could also start a sales outlet of the institute in Kannur during this period as part of various initiatives to improve sales,” he said.
The 100th title being brought out by the regional centre is a book on the history and present state of settlement farmers in the Malabar region written by Varghese Thottakkadu. The work will be released by Culture Minister K.C. Joseph during a function at Koorachundu in the district.
The 101st title to be published, Kadhayezhuth by M. Shajahan, is also ready to be published.
Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb will release the book on Saturday by handing over a copy to writer Subhash Chandran. Head of the Department of Malayalam, University of Calicut, L. Thomas Kutty will deliver the keynote address.
Writer Kunhikkannan Vanimel will introduce the book by Dr. Shajahan, a paediatrician by profession.
