Bringing Puzhukku back on the menu

December 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 24, 2016 11:47 am IST - Kozhikode:

With another Thiruvathira being celebrated on December 26, Green View, a forum of organic farmers in Kozhikode, has set up a facility to provide all the necessary ingredients of the traditional Tiruvathira Puzhukku.

The Thiruvathira Puzhukku is a cooked potpourri of all kinds of available tubers, pulses and some locally available vegetables and is traditionally prepared as a delicacy for the women who observe the fast for Thiruvathira.

The ingredients, mostly indigenous, are rarely available in the market. Hence the Puzhukku is an enigma for the city dwellers.

In its stall set up near the Himayathul Islam Higher Secondary School, Green view provides tubers such as tapioca, Elephant foot, Colocasia and lesser known ones like Kachil and Nanakkizhangu besides raw bananas, Palm powder and so on. Green View also assures that all the ingredients have been produced organically.

Through this endeavour, Green View is also trying to acquaint the younger generation with the delicacy known as puzhukku. The sale will continue till Thursday.
