A new mission for ‘Freedom from Waste’

Waste management is not the sole responsibility of the governments and without people’s participation it will always remain a problem. The Kerala Suchitwa Mission is on a mission to inculcate this message into public through a campaign ‘Freedom from Waste’, which will be launched Statewide in connection with Independence Day celebrations.

“We need yet another freedom struggle to free us from the tons of waste that is accumulated in our surroundings,” K. Vasuki, Executive Director of Suchitwa Mission, told reporters here on Thursday.

The Mission has drawn up an elaborate plan for solid waste management on the basis of a research by Dr. Vasuki. A major part of the plan is to encourage the scrap dealers to play a vital role in ensuring the recycling of a large quantity of solid waste.

“After rigorous efforts over years, Germany is able to recycle only 40 per cent of its waste, while India is recycling 56 per cent without making any deliberate efforts. For us it is just a cost-saving measure, but unknowingly, our scrap dealers are doing such a big service to our environment,” she said.

The campaign will concentrate on making a significant change in the age-old habits of the public in the State so as to include waste management in it. “Home composting is the only and best way for disposing biodegradable waste. If people start composting, segregation is ensured and this will in turn facilitate recycling. Every one should take responsibility. If one puts mind into it, management of biodegradable waste is not an issue even in urban areas,” Dr. Vasuki said. The Mission is partnering with schools, residents associations, media and non-governmental organisations to promote the programme.

Earlier, in a workshop, Dr. Vasuki advised social workers to form self-help groups (SHGs) that could collect only clean and dry waste from houses and stock them at Material Recovery Facilities and supply them to scrap dealers on industries that recycle it. The public shall hand over the dry waste to the SHGs free of cost. The SHGs will be technical resource persons in waste management.
