A melodious tribute to Shyam

Felicitation: Mayor Thottathil Raveendran presenting a memento to music director Shyam at a function in Kozhikode on Thursday.

It has been 35 years since the Malayali first heard the song Thozhuthu madangum sandhyayumetho...

It was from the fine film Aksharangal, written by M.T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by I.V. Sasi.

The poetic lines of the song were penned by O.N.V. Kurup and they were set to a most melodious tune by Shyam.

The singer was Unni Menon, who wasn’t a familiar voice at that time. Three decades and a half later, he sounded almost as young and fresh when he rendered the song at the Tagore Centenary Hall on Thursday night.

Listening to him from the front row was the man who composed the song and thus gave him the break.

The show was conducted by the city-based KALA in the honour of Shyam.

The show featured some of the most popular songs composed by Shyam, who has had a long and melodious innings in Malayalam cinema.

He has composed over 700 songs for Malayalam films in a career that began in 1974, with Manyasree Viswamithran.

Besides Unni Menon, singers Lathika, Krishnachandran, Sindhu Premkumar, Mridula Warrier and Unnimaya also sang some unforgettable songs, including Karukaruthoru pennanu (Njavalpazhangal), Poomaaname... (Nirakkoottu), Raappaadi than... (Daisy), Mainaakam kadalil... (Thrishna), Chandanakkuriyumaayi... (Oru Nokku Kanan), Moodal manjin... (Arorumariyathe) and Olangal thaalam thullumbol... (Kadathu).

And there was a full house to enjoy those songs. Shyam certainly deserved that.
