Tension prevailed in Bovikkanam near here where the car of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) district working president Vamanachari was set on fire allegedly by a group of DYFI workers in the town late on Wednesday evening.
The tension began after a group of DYFI workers, numbering about 50, were taking out a procession in the town, 10 km east from here, hailing the Supreme Court verdict on Tuesday ordering the authorities to disburse Rs. 5 lakh each compensation to eligible endosulfan victims as recommended by the NHRC.
The trouble began as the slogan-shouting DYFI workers manhandled one Bharat, said to be a BJP activist, as he was moving in his autorickshaw in the area around 6.30 pm.
In the melee that followed, DYFI workers alleged set on fire the car of Mr. Vamanachari and vandalised his shop in the town, Adur police station sub-inspector A. Santhosh Kumar told The Hindu .
Senior police officials led by the Kasaragod Dy.SP. and Kasaragod Cirle Inspector of Police C.A. Abdul Rahim are camping in the locality to maintain law and order, he added.
