The Kozhikode Corporation will take action including cancellation of licences of establishments if they are found guilty of discharging liquid waste into Conolly Canal. A day after serving notices on 10 establishments near the canal, the Corporation has gone on to serve notices on 11 more and has even closed the drains of two using concrete mixture.

Corporation Health Officer R.S. Gopakumar in a press release said that Amma Hotel, Ambika mess, a beef stall and a labour camp of Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society were among the establishments that were served notice on Monday by the Palayam Health Inspector. Freshland and Coolbar in Karapparamba, Highway Fast Food, Mr.Clean Car Accessories, Rifayath Hot and Cool, Dolphin Clothing Care and cleaners and V.V. Tea Stall, all in Eranhipalam, besides Mooriyad Hotel have also been served notices.

The drains of Highway Fast Food and V.V. Tea Stall have already been closed by the Corporation. The action was taken under Section 340 A of the Kerala Municipal Act, Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation Act and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act. The establishments have been asked to close their drains within 24 hours and report the same in writing at the Corporation Office. In case of non-compliance, their licences will be cancelled and the owners of the establishments will have to face prosecution.

“The establishments were provided licence on condition that they will make arrangements to process their own solid and liquid waste. Action will be taken against them for violating the licence agreement,” Dr. Gopakumar said.
