Kolkata witnessed the curtain-raiser to the 19th edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz on January 29 with overwhelming participation from prominent schools in the city. Presented by IndianOil Corporation and ‘powered’ by Eveready Industries, the event started on a positive note for The Hindu in School.

Students poured into the Science City Auditorium, some nervous, huddling with parents, others scattered in groups. The enthusiasm was reflected in, for instance, Supravo Saha of Vidyasagar Shishu Niketan School who was participating for the first time, with his entire Class IV batch. Divided into junior and senior categories, the events had participating students from Classes IV to VI and Classes VII to IX, respectively.

G.V. Subhramanian, joint director of Bhavan’s Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir, popularly known as Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, who was the chief guest, appreciated the initiative as one meant “to enhance and implement the knowledge of students outside classrooms”. Such platforms not only teach students the importance of teamwork and healthy competition but also help them gain confidence to come forward, he said.

The prelims kicked off with 68 junior and 71 senior teams, with the participants going for the buzzers to questions fired by V.V. Ramanan, ranging from history to mathematics, sports to environment and technology.

Six teams from each category reached the finals. The students solved every question leading up to the final surprise. Participants in the junior category chose a letter from ‘The Young World Quiz’ for each question that appeared on the screen. For the seniors, there was a twist: each question had a number assigned to it and all the numbers were arranged into a mega-puzzle. Each question revealed a portion of the picture puzzle. With every revealed portion, the bonus for identifying the photo came down.

Senior General Manager (Sales and Distribution) of Eveready Industries Sudeep Ghoshal said that through such event sponsorships his company aimed to empower the minds of young children.

“Such initiatives force them to think out of the box and push their limits in this highly competitive world,” said Hitesh Kumar Sehgal, General Manager Sales & Distribution, East India.

While the junior category witnessed neck and neck competition between Bhavans and The Future Foundation School, the senior category saw a tussle between St. Xavier’s and The Heritage School. The Future Foundation School finished first with Nilesh Majumder and Aratrik Jervari topping the list. Swarnadeep Saha and Abhigyan of Bhavans, and Raktim Kangsha Banik and Judhajit Chowdhury of Sudhir Memorial, were the first and second runners-up in the junior category.

As the scoreboard flashed the final scores of the senior category, the Xaverians emerged champions. The Heritage School finished second. The winning team of Aabesh Biswas and Shreyan Ghosh from St. Xavier’s Collegiate School scored 81 points, followed by Shruto Kalyan Dey and Rishi Choraria of Heritage with 77 points. The second runner-up was from Heritage too — Sanjana Basu and Sneha Jalan.

Nutrition Partner Wondabox provided lunch boxes to all the participants. Power Grid Corporation of India and Frog Cycles were the prize sponsors. All the winners went home with prizes.

The Young World quiz will now travel to 16 more centres across the country.
