Trinamool’s hopes of Suvendu’s return fading

The Trinamool Congress’ hopes of rapprochement with dissident leader Suvendu Adhikari seems to be fading, with the party leadership hinting on Thursday that the issue was becoming a closed chapter.

During the day, Mr. Adhikari held a rally at Tamluk Purba Medinipur in a new nationalist avatar. The 49-year-old walked a three km stretch on the occasion of the 131th birth anniversary of Khudiram Bose, a revolutionary hailing from the district who went to the gallows fighting against the British Empire.

“I am a proud son of Bengal and son of India. I will work for the people of Bengal,” Mr Adhikari said. Along with national flags, the supporters of Mr. Adhikari held posters of Khudiram Bose.

Later in the day, addressing another public gathering at Garbeta in the adjoining Paschim Medinipur district, Mr. Adhikari also made a veiled attack on the Trinamool.

“I am coming here for decades and I know everyone here. A village boy is coming out on the streets, that’s why people living in apartments are getting unnerved,” Mr. Adhikari said.

The Trinamool leader is keeping his cards close to the chest but his departure from Trinamool Congress seems to be only a matter of time. The next few days — when Mr. Adhikari is likely to make more public appearances and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hold a rally in the district — will determine the future course of politics in the State.

The developments on Thursday come a day after the political see-saw of his ties with the Trinamool Congress dominated headlines in poll-bound Bengal. After the Trinamool Congress claimed that they had achieved a breakthrough and Mr. Adhikari remains with the party, a purported message from him to the party leadership said the issue was far from resolved. He had resigned from the State cabinet on November 27.
