: The president of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Sumit Mazumdar, said that the industry was now feeling comfortable in West Bengal, giving a thumbs up to the Trinamool Congress government on the day that marked the completion of its four years in office.
Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, he said, “The investment climate as well as attitude towards the industry is now changing.”
His comments are to be seen in the context of the discomfort felt by the industry in the aftermath of the Singur episode, when Mamata Banerjee as the Trinamool Congress chief had spearheaded a violent agitation against the acquisition of land for the Nano factory at Singur, which led to the project’s exit from the State.
She came to power in May 13, ascending office on May 20.
“Some investments have taken place, but not of the magnitude we want to see,”he said.
Mr Mazumdar also heads the city-based Turnkey International Ltd which has ploughed money in industrial projects in West Bengal in recent times.
He said that this government has streamlined processes, and a land bank has also been created.
On the scheduled visit to the U.K. by Ms Banerjee in July (leading a business delegation), he said that it was good that States were now reaching out to investors in this manner.
He said he expected a lot of UK businessmen to show interest in investing in West Bengal.
