Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP from Bishnupur seat Soumitra Khan on Wednesday quit the party.  Mr Khan told The Hindu that he will join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The MP was inducted in BJP later during the day.  He is the first Lok Sabha MP from the Trinmool Congress to have defected to BJP.

Earlier Mukul Roy, a Trinamool Congress MP to Rajya Sabha had joined BJP.

Mr Khan started his career with the Congress party. He was elected as an MLA from the Congress in 2011 Assembly polls and later defected to Trinmool Congress.

Mr Khan is considered close to Mr. Mukul Roy. On Tuesday, he has posted a video on social media alleging that a police officer in the district is trying to kidnap his personal assistant.
