The death of two college students after being run over by a bus in the city’s Chingrighata area triggered massive clashes between the locals and the police on Saturday. Three buses were set on fire and angry locals threw stones at the police and firefighters.

The police lobbed teargas shells and baton-charged the protesters to disperse them. The confrontation continued for several hours and traffic came to a grinding halt. Chringrighata is a major arterial crossing on the E.M. Bypass, which connects the north and the south of the city.

The accident occurred around 11.15 a.m. when the students, Biswajit Bhunia and Sanjay Banik, were crossing the road on a bicycle. They were run over by the bus, which allegedly jumped the signal.

It took the police several hours to control the situation. Several public and private vehicles were damaged. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and his licence cancelled. The State government has offered ₹2 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased.

A number of other accidents were reported in the State during the day in which two more people lost their lives and 11 others suffered injuries.
