Reaching out to workers of a jute mill in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday asserted his commitment towards the weaker sections of society.

“I am with you all whether you are a jute mill worker, a farmer. Wherever you see weak people you will find Rahul Gandhi standing besides them,” Mr. Gandhi said interacting with them at the Wellington Jute Mill complex.

The jute industry is in the throes of a crisis and a number of mills in the State are under work suspension affecting employment of around 75,000 workers.

Mr. Gandhi told the workers that the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress had put brakes on the development in Bengal.

“Unless the Congress comes to power here, the vehicle will not move forward,” he said

Speaking to journalists outside the jute mill complex, the Congress leader said this was not only about the jute mill workers but a comment on the country's overall situation.

“Every single promise made by the Narendra Modi government has been broken”.

“I came here to see with my own eyes how the workers of jute mills live,” Mr. Gandhi said expressing concern about their condition.

The Congress vice-president assured he would raise the plight of jute mill workers in Parliament.
