Protests over the death of a student of the Aliah University spilled on the streets of Kolkata on Saturday.

The unnatural death of Anish Khan, a student leader of the university, had led to students blocking roads at important arterial intersection and breaking police barricades. In the evening, the students, both boys and girls, stopped traffic at the Park Circus crossing. Some students of the Jadavpur University joined them demanding justice for the student leader.

Anish Khan was found dead at his home in Amta block in Howrah district on Friday evening. The family members said a few men in police uniform barged into the home and threw Anish from the three–storied house.

“ One person was dressed in police uniform and three as civil police. They put a firearm to my head and threw my son from the third floor,” the father of the student said.

Soumya Roy, SP, Howrah rural, said if the policemen had gone to the house of the deceased they would have brought him to the police station.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) polit bureau member Md. Salim said Anish Khan was leading a protest at the university for the past 137 days. Mr. Salim described the incident as one of the most “gruesome murders” of a student leader in the State in decades.

A war of words among the political parties erupted over the death. Trinamool Congress leader and Minister Firhad Hakim said there was a “deep–rooted conspiracy” over the incident and expressed hope that the police will get to the bottom of it.

Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari blamed the police for the incident and alleged that there was no difference between the cadres of the ruling party and the police personnel.
