The police require support and cooperation from the public to continue serving them better, newly-appointed Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference at the Kolkata Police headquarters after taking over charge from Surajit Kar Purakayastha, Mr. Kumar said: “The Kolkata Police is a prestigious organisation in the country. I hope I will keep the flag of the Kolkata Police flying high.”

“This is a great honour and responsibility for me. I understand that it is like a relay race when the baton is handed over to a new person who will continue the same good work,” Mr. Kumar said.

Mr. Kumar, a 1989-batch IPS officer who turned 50 this January 31, stated the police need cooperation from the people to keep a check on crime thus serving them better.

“They (people in the past) used to say police is public and public is police...We will require cooperation from all sections of the society so that we can serve them better,” Mr. Kumar said.

Mr. Kumar, who was the Additional Director-General of Police, CID, had earlier served as the Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate and as chief of the Special Task Force (STF) section of the Kolkata Police.

Mr. Kar Purakayastha, a 1985-batch IPS officer, has been promoted to the Director General of Police (CID).

Mr. Kumar, known for his ability with electronic surveillance gadgets and his dogged pursuit of matters, is a BE in Computer Science from University of Roorkee (presently the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee).

Mr. Kumar was the officer in-charge of Durgapur Police station in his first posting. He was also the Superintendent of Police of Birbhum, besides being the special SP of Enforcement Branch, DC (EB), DC Central Division, Special SP (CID), Deputy Inspector-General, CID (Operations), Joint Commissioner (STF), Additional Commissioner of Kolkata Police and Commissioner, Bidhannagar Police and Additional Director-General (CID). - PTI
