The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation has stopped plying its buses for a week in the Maoist-hit regions in the southern parts of the State from Sunday because of martyrs’ week being observed by Maoists.

Security was also tightened in the Maoist activity prone districts — Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada. The martyrs’ week will continue till August 3.

According to authorities of the OSRTC’s Berhampur division, buses operating from Jeypore and Rayagada depots have been stopped completely.

Similarly, buses travelling to these districts from Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Bhanjanagar will have their services cancelled till the end of the week. However, private bus operators continue to run their buses in these districts.

According to sources, the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border in Malkangiri district has been sealed off and combing operations by security personnel have been intensified.
