A team of Bidhannagar City police has arrested a teacher from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly raping a student in West Bengal. The accused has been brought to the city on a transit remand.

The accused has been identified as Priyesh Singh Sengar. The victim said in her complaint that she had enrolled in a private institute in Salt Lake, Kolkata to prepare for civil services exams where the accused was a geography teacher.

The alleged assault took place in December 2021 at a guest house of the private institute where she was called on the pretext of extra classes. The accused had threatened the woman that he would kill everyone in her family if she informed the police.

A few months later, the accused called and threatened the victim to circulate videos on social media unless she paid him ₹5 lakh. The survivor approached the police on February 15 and lodged a complaint of rape and criminal intimidation against the teacher.

The accused has been booked under Section 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation). The case is being investigated by a woman police officer.
