West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday lauded the performance of her Panchayat and Rural Development Department which topped the list of States in spending on MGNREGA project and took the lead in sanitation campaign.

In her Facebook post, the Chief Minister said the State’s expenditure in the 100-day work programme in 2014-15 was Rs.4,009.76 crore, the highest in the country.

The State also created 16.7 crore mandays under the scheme, which was the second highest in the country after Tamil Nadu, Ms. Banerjee said.

The Chief Minister said in her post that in a video conference among the States today, the Centre acknowledged that West Bengal’s performance was the best in sanitation campaign.

“We had constructed 8.47 lakh toilets last year which was the highest in the country. This year, till now, we have built 3.22 lakh toilets, which again is the highest,” she said.

“We are committed to do our best for Bengal. My best wishes to everyone,” Ms. Banerjee said. State’s Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee congratulated everybody in his department for the achievement, which he thought would help them continue with these projects and get more funds from the Centre.
