A city court rejected West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra’s bail plea and extended his judicial custody till January 30. Mr. Mitra was arrested by the CBI in December last year for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore Saradha scam.

On his way to the court, Mr. Mitra heaped praises on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while speaking to media persons.

Meanwhile, a PIL was filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking Mr. Mitra’s disqualification as the State’s Transport and Sport Minister and MLA. “Mr. Mitra has failed to perform his duties as the Transport and Sport Minister as well as an MLA since he is in jail. Therefore, we have sought his disqualification,” said lawyer Subhrojit Bhaduri, who filed the PIL.

However, Mr. Mitra’s solicitor Niladri Bhatttacharya told The Hindu, “The PIL has to be admitted first and it will come up for hearing on January 21. We are going to oppose it.”
