Jute mill official beaten up

: In yet another incident of labour unrest in West Bengal, an official of Victoria Jute Mill in Hooghly was roughed up allegedly by irate workers of the jute mill.

This comes a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee admitted that there is a communication gap between the management and the labour unions and said that a meeting will be called to address the issue.

The workers allegedly roughed up Gyanchand Upadhyay, a mill official, when they saw a notice pasted on the gate that workers of mill No. 1 will have to work in mill No. 2 as work at mill no 1 will remain suspended.

The police and rapid action force were called in to bring the situation under control.

“Nobody would have lost his job. The decision was taken in consultation with trade unions,” Mr Upadhayay told The Hindu. I got assaulted for no reason, he added

In June, the CEO of the Northbrook Jute Mill H.K. Maheshwari was murdered by angry workers over reduction of working hours.

Earlier this week another incident of violence was reported at Hastings Jute Mill in the district.
