Former Calcutta High Court judge C.S. Karnan, currently lodged in Presidency Jail, has written to Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi seeking parole. Justice (retd) Karnan was lodged at Presidency Jail on Wednesday and was admitted to the State-run SSKM Hospital on Thursday.
Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday, the former judge’s lawyer Mathews J. Nedumpara said that he (Justice Karnan) “has sought parole from the Governor. The related letter has already been posted to the Governor.
“For the reasons stated hereinabove, it is most respectfully prayed that Your Excellency, the Governor of West Bengal, be pleased to exercise the jurisdiction invested in Your Excellency and enlarge the prisoner, Justice C.S. Karnan on bail/parole in the interest of justice and equity,” stated the letter to the Governor.
On health grounds
As for the reason for seeking parole, Mr. Nedumpara argued that apart from the legal grounds, the former justice should be granted parole on health grounds. “Justice Karnan needs treatment. He is seeking parole for medical reasons also,” said Mr. Nedumpara. He also said that that the former judge’s health condition has “improved to a certain extent.”
Mr. Nedumpara met Justice Karnan on Saturday evening at SSKM hospital to complete the formalities of seeking parole.
After a team of West Bengal Police arrested Justice Karnan from Coimbatore on Tuesday, he was brought to Kolkata on Wednesday and lodged at Presidency Jail in the city. He was admitted to the SSKM Hospital on Thursday.
