: Rejecting an application of the West Bengal Government, the Calcutta High Court on Friday held that the elections to seven municipal bodies in the State should be held in accordance with the Court’s directive earlier.

In its order in April, the High Court had held that the West Bengal State Election Commission has primacy in fixing the dates of conducting the polls.

On Friday, a Division Bench of Chief Justice Majula Chellur and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that they will not entertain the plea of the State government.

The West Bengal State Election Commission has decided to call an all party meeting to hold the polls as per the order.

The West Bengal Government had approached the High Court seeking a modification of the order issued by the Court on April 16 in which it had directed the State Election Commission to complete the election process in the next two months.

The development comes as a major embarrassment to the Bengal government as it did not want to hold elections to the seven municipal bodies in June this year.

The seven civic bodies are Asansol Municipal Corporation, Kulti Municipality, Raniganj Municipality, Jamuria Municipality, Bidhannagar Municipality, Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality and Bally Municipality.
