Gorkha League demands protection for witnesses in Tamang case

Slain leader Madan Tamang

A day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet against the senior leadership of the Gorkha Janmukti Morchi (GJM) in connection with the murder of All India Gorkha League (AIGL) leader Madan Tamang, the League demanded on Saturday that security be provided to the witnesses in this case.

“Those named in the charge sheet are influential people and that is why the case was shifted from Darjeeling to Kolkata. Since the crime was committed in broad daylight, there are many witnesses and their security may be at stake now,” AIGL general secretary Pratap Khati told The Hindu .

Tamang’s wife, Bharati Tamang, expressed satisfaction at the progress of the investigation.

Tamang was killed on May 21, 2010, at Darjeeling Chowrasta. The CBI had been investigating the case since 2011 and on Friday, filed a final supplementary charge sheet before a court in Kolkata. The court will take up the charge sheet on Monday.

Along with GJM chief Bimal Gurung, the charge sheet has the names of the top leadership of the party, including MLAs elected from the hills, Roshan Giri and Harka Bahadur Chettri. Ms. Gurung’s wife, Asha Gurung, who heads the women’s wing of GJM, is also named.

The GJM leadership remained tight-lipped, and said the party would seek legal recourse.

Mr. Chettri said he would act in accordance with the directions of the court.

Legal issue: BJP

BJP State unit president Rahul Sinha said this was a legal issue. The GJM had supported BJP candidates in north Bengal and the support was crucial for party candidate S.S. Ahluwalia’s election to the Lok Sabha in 2014.
