Taxi operators stayed off roads on Thursday thereby inconveniencing passengers.

The taxi strike, called by the Kolkata Taxi Operator’s Union and the West Bengal Taxi Operators’ Coordination Committee — affiliated to the Leftist All India Trade Union Congress — was a protest against alleged police atrocities and a demand for a fare hike.

Almost 45,000 taxis stayed off roads, resulting in a harrowing time for people who arrived in the city from the Howrah and Sealdah railway stations and the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

A taxi committee would be formed, headed by State Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee, which would look into the revision of taxi fares, Transport Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said.
