A day before the three mysterious iron chests, thought to be more than 300 years old, are going to be opened at Gariahat police station in Kolkata, there is considerable buzz in the city. Heavy media presence is expected at Gariahat police station on Monday. The weight of each of the iron chests, according to the police, is about 1,000 kilogram. This has made the public curiosity about their content even more intense. “The chests will be opened about mid day tomorrow (Monday),” the police said here on Sunday.
The chests that have been gathering dust at Gariahat police station for the last six years were first discovered in 2008 after an elderly woman sold her piece of land to a private company in south Kolkata. A legal tussle ensued between the woman and the company as both of them claimed that the chests belonged to them. They were kept at Gariahat police station as the legal battle continued. Finally, in December last year, the court ordered the authorities concerned to open the chests. They will be opened by fire brigade personnel in the presence of officials from Geological Survey of India, Archaeological Survey of India, and senior officials of Kolkata police.
