Environmental activists to move court

Disappointed with the police that even after almost two weeks since they were attacked for raising their voices against the illegal felling of trees in Santipur in West Bengal’s Nadia district, activists have decided to move the Calcutta High Court against police inaction.

A doctor and some activists were assaulted by ‘armed hooligans’ on April 28 for protesting against trees being illegally chopped at a garden in Santipur in West Bengal’s Nadia district. “So far only one person has been arrested while the main accused is still absconding. A total of 10 persons were named in the FIR. We are still issued threats and our lives are at risk. I had sought police protection after I was attacked by goons. The police are yet to deploy any guards. Suspicious people keep moving about my residence and chamber,” Goutam Kumar Pal told The Hindu and alleged that the goons were backed by the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Civil society groups have sent out petitions on their behalf to Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
