‘Bengali fishermen in Bangladesh will return’

Fishermen from the Sunderbans region in West Bengal who were detained by the Bangladesh authorities for entering its territory would return home soon, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday.

She was speaking to reporters during her trip to Sunderbans.

However, the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh in Kolkata said they have no official information in this regard.

Ms. Banerjee also said that she had written to the Centre to ensure speedy release of the fishermen by taking up the matter with the Bangladesh government. “The fishermen were unaware of some recent changes in the boundary,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard has apprehended two Bangladeshi trawlers with five men onboard, about 60 miles off the Sagar island for illegally entering Indian waters, a senior police official said.

“They were produced in court after being arrested. The court has remanded them to judicial custody,” Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas Praveen Tripathi told The Hindu.
