In a reshuffle of the IPS cadres in West Bengal, Anuj Sharma was on Tuesday appointed as the Commisioner of Kolkata Police.

Rajeev Kumar, who held the post of city police for the past few years was appointed as Additional Director General (ADG) of Criminal Investigation Department [CID]. The West Bengal government had earlier described it as “routine reshuffle” as Mr. Kumar had remained at the post for more than three years.

The change in guard at the Kolkata Police also came at the suggestions of the Election Commission of India. The ECI indicated in an earlier press conference in the city that senior officers working in one position for three years ought to be shifted out. Before being appointed as Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Mr Sharma was ADG (Law and Order) West Bengal Police. He has been replaced by Siddhi Nath Gupta.

Kashmiris safe in city, says new CP

Speaking to journalists after assuming charge, Mr Sharma assured that all Kashmiris are safe in Kolkata and security has been beefed up in the areas where they reside.

“Kashmiris are very safe in the city. We have already identified the pockets where they are staying. We have interacted with them and ensured their safety and security,” he told journalists at the Lalbazar Police headquarters. Mr Sharma said that the Kolkata Police is already doing a very good job in serving the people of Kolkata and there is need for some “ fine tuning”.

“Our focus area will be bringing communities closer to the police, protection of women,” he added.
