: The Met department here on Tuesday said that Cyclone Hudhud is gaining momentum over the Andaman Sea.
“A depression has formed over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, 250 km east of Port Blair. Within the next 24 hours, it is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm and move west-northwestwards over Bay of Bengal,” said Alipore Regional Meteorological Department director G.C. Debnath.
While the cyclone is likely to cause heavy rainfall in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, northern Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, it would take 48 hours to see if it has any effect in West Bengal, Mr. Debnath said and added that the cyclone might change its course.
The Met department has forecast squally winds over Andaman and Nicobar Islands with wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph. An alert has been sounded to fishermen, asking them to refrain from venturing into the sea for the next 48 hours, as the sea is expected to be very rough. Thatched huts and communication and power lines would suffer from damage, a release of the Met department stated.
Meanwhile, Kolkata received 14.8 mm of rainfall during the day and the weather remained cool and breezy throughout the day. Although the rainfall the city received was a localised thunderstorm, the cyclone might result in more rainfall in the region.
