Nine persons involved in the ongoing agitation at Bhangar in the South 24 Paraganas district were granted bail by a district court on Saturday.

The villagers have been agitating over the last six months against the establishment of a power grid in the area.

“Out of the nine activists granted bail on Saturday, eight were charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. They [the nine activists ] are yet to be released from jail,” the activists’ counsel Rangta Munshi said.

11 persons still in jail

She also said that, so far, 36 persons have been charged under the UAPA and cases have been lodged against 1,500 unknown persons under the same Act.

Eleven protesters are still in jail.
